By What Authority?

Having just finished reading letters from fellow citizens on the proposed government run national Healthcare boondoggle, I can't help but believe this grand experiment has failed. Was there a Constitutional Amendment passed while I slept? Why is not a single citizen or Journalist asking what article of the Constitution grants Congress the authority to even cut the check? My copy of the document shows nothing that would allow them to do this. The authors of the Document said that the powers granted to the Federal government are "few and defined" and they put it in writing - see the 10th Amendment. Or was it repealed? While will no one mention this? Is it because once you ask that question you have to look at all the other extra-Constitutional programs that Congress has enacted for which they also have no authority (see Social Security, Medicare, etc,)? I guess today's journalists are just too afraid to open up that Pandora's Box. Or they simply believe that the Constitution can be circumvented if the cause is good so they turn a blind eye. Either way, the Constitution looses all meaning.

How sad.
